The Last River

Film· 2026· Epic, Action

The river is dying, and three kingdoms stand along it. Each one is certain the other two are taking more than their share. EDRIC sends his knights to hold the far bank and tells his people it is only a dry summer. HALVAR drags his longships through mud where there was water last year, and his brother TORVALD sharpens what is left of the axes. KAITO counts what remains in the wells of his village and does not tell his daughter the number. None of them ever looks upstream. Above them all, behind a wall that no map has bothered to name, RAITH keeps sixty stone cisterns filled to the brim. He watches the valley through a gap in the battlement, lets a cup run over the edge because he can, and moves three carved pieces across a board on his table. The three kingdoms come down into the dry bed on the same afternoon. They fight through the dusk and into the night, by torchlight and burning tents, until the water at the centre runs red and a girl with an empty bucket is caught in the middle of it. At dawn the survivors carry what they can back up the banks. Far above, a hand tips a cup over a parapet and does not watch it fall.
